slap dash mish mash

You may all refer to me as flutter Stewart, daughter of Martha.

Which works on so many levels, because my mother’s name really is Martha ( not Stewart, but let’s not be picky) and I am one crafty bitch.

To wit:

icky.jpg

one icky, nasty inherited coffee table. I am not a fan of light, cheap wood. I am especially not a fan of light cheap wood with scratches and dents and crappy glass inserts. Inserts likes these:

crappy-glass.jpg

Blech.

But because my mother IS coming into town, I wanted my house to look nice. NONE of my furniture is light wood, hence….

finished-table.jpg

Isn’t it pretty? What you can’t see is the rice paper that I treated the glass with to tie in the Asian theme I have going on in my livingroom. See what I do when I just can’t get words on the page? I refinish furniture. Random. From ugly ass free hotel table, to functional, matching piece for under $40.

******

It’s been a weird day, my mother should be here with me now, and a canceled flight has kept her away from me another day. There are people I am missing. Things that are weighing on my heart that I am unable to write about. This song has been playing on repeat on my iPod. So, I will share it with you.

I‘ll sing it one last time for you
Then we really have to go
You’ve been the only thing that’s right
In all I’ve done

And I can barely look at you
But every single time I do
I know we’ll make it anywhere
Away from here

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I’ll be right beside you dear

Louder louder
And we’ll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can’t raise your voice to say

To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbye
I nearly do

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I’ll be right beside you dear

Louder louder
And we’ll run for our lives
I can hardly speak I understand
Why you can’t raise your voice to say

Slower slower
We don’t have time for that
All I want is to find an easier way
To get out of our little heads

Have heart my dear
We’re bound to be afraid
Even if it’s just for a few days
Making up for all this mess

Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I’ll be right beside you dear

Ooooh. That looks nice. It is amazing how much is added to a piece of furniture by a coat of black paint. Good job. The theme in my living room? Mid-century modern meets Scandinavian minimalism plus MESSY children and MESSIER dog. HGTV-worthy it is not.

  2. Chani Says:

    That table is just beautiful!

  3. Jennifer H Says:

    The table looks great.

Call me if I can do anything, okay? Sending good thoughts…

  4. Lara Says:

    am blowing kisses your way.

    mwah!

  5. Cara Says:

I’m sorry your Mum’s flight was cancelled, it sounds like you could do with a Mum Hug. I hope she gets there soon.

Great table! I like your butterfly picture above it too. So pretty. I know that game of finding something to do when you can’t do what you’d want to do. I’ve been making candles, for want of the ability to do something that involves more thought. Sometimes the brain just needs a break though.

  6. Blog Antagonist Says:

Oh….we could have so much fun together. I love to do that kind of stuff, but it’s so much more fun with an accomplice, er, I mean, partner.

Enjoy your visit with your Mom!

  7. cce Says:

I’m pretty impressed with your furniture skills. Could you come over and revive my butt ugly coffee table? And who’s that singing such a song full of longing? You know, in honor of spring I’ve added a few up-tempo tunes to the iPod. My favorite, Natasha Betingfield’s Pocket Full of Sunshine. Hope your Mum gets to you soon.

  8. kristen Says:

i love the dark wood now and even more, the butterfly artwork on the wall above. i understand the weighing and not being able to speak about it. music does soothe my soul.

  12. chanda Says:

Martha would be so proud! (Both of them). The table looks great. Enjoy the time with your mom, those visits can be restorative. (and a pox on the airline industry for delaying that visit).

  13. Bob Says:

great job with the table. you ARE one crafty bitch!

I’m lucky, my parents live 35 miles away. I’m not so lucky, my in-laws live 1000 miles away. I wish we could see them more often. My wife has a great family.

I hope your mom gets there soon. and you get(got) some rest.

  14. Madge Says:

the table is wonderful. hope your mom arrives today, or is there already and you have a wonderful time.

  16. Katie Says:

Holy crap, Flutter… who sings that song??? I LOVE IT!!!

  17. Sayre Says:

Color me terribly impressed with your table. When can you come do MY furniture?

So sorry for Mom-delayed, but Mom-arrived will be worth it. Enjoy your time with her and try not to let things weigh you down so heavily. Look for some light! Perhaps in one of those Mom-hugs.

  18. magpie Says:

    You do good work!

    Relentless.
    Really creative.

Have a wonderful connection of hearts, minds and souls with your loved ones, you Rasta Rebel.

(Funny. I played that song the other day and haven’t listened to that disc for eons. Cool.)

  22. Amy Y Says:

More reasons to love my favorite flutter…
Awesome job on the table! Can you do something like that to my nasty ass light wood dining room table? It’s probably hopeless to someone without obvious talent as yours.

I hope your mom gets here safe, sound and soon! Sometimes a girl just needs her mom. I have to see mine every few months … but only for about 5 days. After that we’re ready to kill each other :)

And I love Snow Patrol! that is one of my favorite songs… have you heard “Set the Fire to the Third Bar”? That’s the one I play over and over… until my boys are ready to throw up. heh. But I love just about everything they’ve done that I’ve heard. And I can’t say that about too many bands ~ them, Josh Radin and Death Cab would probably do it.

    Anyway… blah blah blah.

And when you’re ready to share… you know we’ll be here. In the mean time… sending hugs and love your way…

    Have a good day :)

  23. jess Says:

Cool project! I thoroughly approve of the Japanese paper. :)

& great video, I love that song but I’d never see it. Hope your mom arrives soon! i just got back from visiting mine.

  24. we_be_toys Says:

Nice Job on the table!! I wished I could see the rice paper better, but it sounds like a good way to do something textural and interesting with a glass top.
    Good on ya, Flutter!

Hope you have a lovely visit with your mom!

  25. qt Says:

See, now that is the kind of project that in my head I would like to do, but in reality, I never get around to doing…

I hope your mom makes it posthaste. And I love this song, tho it reminds me of a pretty rough patch….

  26. Franki Says:

Nice recycling there Flutter! Looks great!

  27. hele Says:

Its been a long day and I was kept awake all night, first by bad chicken, then by crying puppy left behind by brothers old enough to escape from bed and then by F’s alarm going off at six.

So I can’t think of a single thing to say other than I really like flutter.

  28. Gwen Says:

Ya know, if you get bumfuzzled again any time soon, I’m pretty sure I have large quantities of ugly ass light wood furniture that could do with an artist’s touch.

I hope you have a great visit with your moms.

  29. CamiKaos Says:

the table is beautiful… I’m sorry about your mom’s delay… sometimes there is nothing like having your mom there with you…

  30. Janet Says:

I am a huge fan of dark wood. I just love what you did.

  31. Jen M Says:

Girl you have serious talent. I am jealous! I need your skilz at my house – come on and make the drive up – I’ll feed you well!

  32. MamaGeek Says:

Wow, perhaps you could refinish some of our craptacular furniture? Tis awesome!

  33. Erin Says:

I am so with you and the blonde wood thing. Somehow it seems without soul. I like what you did with the piece! Know what’s better than a dark piece of wood? Chocolate. Oh, I meant to say moms. Have fun. I’m lucky to be around my mom now but for many years we were countries apart. It’s an aching absence. Hey, eat chocolate with your mom. Ya, that’ll work.

  34. sadira Says:

Flutter…I don’t think the tables at hotels are considered complimentary…just the soap and stuff. With that said…you did a great job! Your mum will be so impressed…

  35. Maggie, dammit Says:

Is this about me again? This is about me, isn’t it.

Wait — why isn’t this ever about ME?

    What were we saying?

I’m not surprised you created a gorgeous coffee table. Everything you touch turns to gold, no doubt.

    Enjoy yo mama.

  36. melanie Says:

thats a great song. I had it repeating on my pod a few times too. :D

    crafty smafty… looks good!

  37. emily Says:

Refinishing furniture, creating something beautiful out of something you wouldn’t mind throwing away, exercises the same creative muscles as writing, and will hopefully encourage your words to find their way to the page.

(((hugs))) to you. Hoping your Mom makes it there soon.

  38. Aliki Says:

I’m impressed by that table, too. I always have a zillion great ideas about how a piece of furniture would look if I did x,y,and z to it but I have no follow-through.

Hugs to you–hope your mom gets there soon!

  39. Lisa b Says:

  42. JCK Says:

Oh, but you ARE crafty! Hope your mom gets there soon!

  43. Arkie Mama Says:

My husband has this *shudder* hulking, antique hall tree.

I would be happy to send it your way for a professional opinion and refinishing.

And guess what!! I’ll even let you keep it! For free!!

OK, seriously, great job. And seriously, the hall tree is yours. Once I pry his fingers from it.

  44. Kat Says:

I love what you did with that table, it looks amazing!

    Hope your mom arrives soon.

  45. S. Moore Says:

You are fab-oooo!!! That table would have retailed for $150 at pier 1 or world market!!!

  46. Victoria Says:

Martha will be proud, Flutter. Hope Mom has arrived safe and sound now. Enjoy your visit sitting near your new table. :)

  47. Julie Pippert Says:

Hope your mom arrives soon (or has done).

  48. Hetha Says:

I love that table! Nice work young Stewart.
Hopefully your mom is there now and you’re enjoying some time together.

  49. Carrie Says:

    Have fun with your mom!

  50. rima Says:

I’m loving the dark wood these days, too. And that table is very fine, indeed. I hope your mother makes it in as soon as possible. Enjoy your weekend, C!

  51. KC Says:

So impressed, Ms. Stewart. I once tried to make an old, gross lacquer mirror into a cool, antiqued one and ended up with something even uglier than I started with.

You should totally host your own cooking/decorating/jill-of-all-trades tv show.

  52. Heather Says:

I wish that I was able to believe in your song. I do believe in your table. Good job artist type winged one!

  53. Painted Maypole Says:

you are a crafty bitch. :)

  54. urban urchin Says:

You ARE one crafty bitch. That table looks great! As do you in the photo btw… Hope you are now enjoying time with your mom., Oh and I love me some Snow Patrol….

  55. Yoli Says:

I constantly have HGTV on at home. I think my poor children do not know the words to Dora’s songs but the jingles of each show. I however am too much of a coward to take on any project. Yours looks beautiful, you did an amazing job.
